Masai Mara Accommodation Mara Explorer Camp Sustainability

Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Minimizing the environmental impact of the area where the camp is located along Talek River. Most of the staff who work at the camp are local Masai.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

The Mara Explorer Camp Management Staff make sure the Talek Ecosystem, where the camp is built, is not degraded by the local people and the camp itself. Most of the field staff are from the Masai community. The camp uses biodegradable waste materials which are mulched for compost. Instead of the camp collecting the firewood from its environment, they heat the water using the briquettes made from coffee husks.

Mara Explorer always support the medical clinics and primary schools in the area hence locals children are able to get primary school education as they were not going to school before this schools were built and when sick they are treated at a nearby clinic.

All visitors going to Mara Explorer Camp are requested to support the Masai people by visiting their homesteads and paying a small entrance fee. The Masai cultural village tour is very fascinating experience as you get to learn how Masai people live harmonious with the nature, wildlife and other Kenyans as well.
