Sustainability
This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.
Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:
The Base Camp is one of the most eco-friendly camps in Masai Mara; they are concerned about the conservation of the natural areas in the national park.
Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
Base Camp is the camp where American President Barrack Obama spent his night while on a Masai Mara safari visit due to its social, economical and environmentally consciousness. While at the Base Camp you will be welcomed by Masai staff members and able learn about the Masai people and their way of life since they make up the majority of the staff. It is also possible to take a walk to speak at greater length with some of the Masai warriors on a Masai cultural village tour that we offer. While shopping for loved ones back home, we invite you to browse in our souvenir shop that is maintained by local Masai women and pays them a fair wage to support their families.
During your stay. you can participate in a tree planting exercise or adopt a baby cheetah through the camp's cheetah conservation project as a way to help contribute to the sustainability of the destination. The camp is run on solar energy as a way to be self-sustainable in our energy use and minimise our dependence on fossil fuels. Guests that choose to stay at the Base Camp will be supporting the lives of many through our outreach of community development projects while also helping to protect the environment. Clearly, the president of the USA stayed here for a reason!
